Mayura

Mayura

The peacock bangle, made in the antique manner, down to the metal.

Two peacocks meet at the front, crested, their eyes set with single rosecuts.

Mayura
Mayura is Sanskrit for peacock, the bird that has been worked into Indian gold for longer than any house has existed. Two of them meet at the front of this bangle, crested, their eyes set with single rosecuts.

The piece is built the way the finest diamond jewellery was built from the eighteenth century into the Edwardian era: the stones set in silver, the structure in gold, and the silver left to oxidise into the dark patina that gives old diamonds their depth. Silver-topped gold is not a saving. It is the method, and it is the reason the rosecuts here glow against black rather than flashing against white.

The plumage is engraved by hand and runs the full length of the band, tight at the neck and opening into tail feathers along the back, with the larger rosecuts set like the eyes of the feathers. The engraving continues on the inside of the bangle, in a floral band that nobody but the wearer will see.

The gold is 14K, chosen for hardness. A bangle takes more knocks than anything else she will wear, and the alloy is picked for the life of the piece rather than the purity on the hallmark.
