You may have seen the words "one of one" on a piece of jewellery and wondered what they really mean. The phrase is used a lot, and not always with care. At Amarkosh, it has a plain meaning: the piece was made once, and it will not be made again.

This guide explains what that means for you, how a one of one piece differs from a limited run, and how to see one in person at our studio in Mumbai.

Made once, not made in a batch

Most jewellery is made from a design that can be repeated. A ring or a pair of earrings is drawn once and then made again whenever someone orders it. That is a good way to make everyday pieces, and it is how many fine pieces are made.

A one of one piece starts the other way round. It begins with the stones. The design is shaped around the exact colour, cut and size of the stones in front of us, so it cannot be copied with a different set. When it is finished, there is no second piece waiting in a drawer and no plan to make another.

Our Statement collection puts it in one line: everything there is seen by appointment, and most of it was made once and will not be made again.

Why the stones decide the design

Take Chandrika, a necklace of diamond drops hanging side by side, long and short in turn. Each drop is a group of baguette diamonds set so close together that they look like one large stone. A border of round diamonds and a row of cream cultured Akoya pearls run along the bottom edge. The pearls were chosen for their warmth, to soften the brightness of the diamonds. In all, there are 23.05 carats of diamonds, G colour and VS clarity, in 18K yellow gold.

A necklace like this depends on matching many stones to each other. With a different set of baguettes, the drops would sit differently and catch the light differently. You could make something similar. You could not make the same thing.

The same is true of Indradhanush, our rainbow set. Its sapphires are pink, peach, yellow, lavender and pale blue, cut into kites, hexagons and other angular shapes, and fitted together like the glass in a stained-glass window. The pattern exists because of those exact stones.

Why the making matters too

Some pieces are one of one because of how they are made, not only what they are made from. Mayura is a bangle where two peacocks meet at the front, each with a rosecut diamond for an eye. It is made the old way: the diamonds are set in silver that is darkened on purpose, on a gold body, so they glow softly instead of sparkling brightly. The feathers are engraved by hand along the band and on the inside, where only the wearer will see them.

Hand engraving is never quite the same twice. Even if we set out to make a second peacock bangle, the lines would fall differently. Mayura holds 5.25 carats of warm-toned rosecut diamonds in 14K yellow gold, which is harder than 18K and better suited to a bangle that will be worn often.

What one of one does not mean

It does not mean "limited edition". A limited edition is a fixed number of the same piece. A one of one piece has no twin.

It does not mean the piece can never inspire another. Celeste Radiance, a long diamond necklace with a pair of earrings, is now in a private collection. We can make new pieces in the same style for clients who ask, but they will be new pieces with their own stones and their own character. The original stays one of one.

And it does not mean you have to take the quality on trust. IGI and GIA certificates are available for most pieces, and for the rest on request. Every Statement listing on our site gives the stones, the carat weights and the gold, so you know what you are looking at before you ask to see it.

How to see a one of one piece

Statement pieces are not bought from a product page. They are seen. Photographs show the design, but they cannot show how a rosecut diamond glows against dark silver, or how a long necklace moves when you turn your head.

You can see them in two ways. Visit our studio in Mumbai for a private viewing, where you can hold each piece, try it on and ask anything you like. Or, if you live elsewhere, we can show you the pieces over a video call, close up and one at a time.

A good viewing is unhurried. Bring the questions you would ask about any important piece: where you would wear it, how it sits, how to care for it, and what certificates come with it. You can look through the full Statement collection before you come, so you know which pieces you want to see.

A one of one piece suits someone who wants a jewel that is theirs alone, made around stones chosen for it and finished by hand. It is the kind of piece that is worn for a wedding and then for many years after, and passed on with its story.

If one of these pieces has caught your eye, we would be glad to show it to you. Book a private viewing at our Mumbai studio or over video, or message us on WhatsApp at +91 99874 14774.
