Pearl Chatai

Pearl Chatai

Seed pearls, woven by hand.

Hold it flat and it lies like fabric. Put it on and it takes the shape of the wearer.

A chatai is a woven mat, and that is exactly what this is. Hundreds of seed pearls threaded by hand into a tight lattice, so the work drapes rather than sits, with none of the rigidity a metal piece of that width would bring.

What sits on the weave changes everything. Rows of ruby baguettes and ovals with diamond lines between them read as architecture. Florets of cream pearls around pavé centres, with rosecuts bezel set into the lattice, read as something closer to embroidery. Same technique, same hand, pieces with almost nothing else in common.

The pearls are cultured seed pearls, picked by hand for size and tone before any stringing begins. At this scale a pearl half a millimetre out of step is visible across a room, so the sorting takes longer than the setting.
